EdArXiv Preprints | MetaMate: Large Language Model to the Rescue of Automated Data Extraction for Educational Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses

EdArXiv Preprints | MetaMate: Large Language Model to the Rescue of Automated Data Extraction for Educational Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are crucial for synthesizing evidence but are time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially during data extraction. To address this challenge, we developed MetaMate, an open-access web-based tool leveraging large language models (LLMs) for automated data extraction in educational systematic reviews and meta-analyses. MetaMate utilizes a hierarchical schema and divide-and-conquer approach in its extraction chain, and a from-global-to-local lens and example retriever in its verification chain. We evaluated MetaMate’s performance on 32 empirical studies, extracting 20 data elements related to participants and interventions. MetaMate achieved high precision, recall, and F1 scores, with performance comparable to human coders when benchmarked against an expert-defined gold standard. Notably, MetaMate demonstrated advanced mathematical reasoning and semantic comprehension, surpassing keyword-based approaches and avoiding common human errors. As the first LLM-powered data extraction tool designed specifically for educational research, MetaMate has the potential to significantly streamline the systematic review process and reduce time and effort for researchers. MetaMate is available at https://metamate.streamlit.app.

(No) Hope for the future? A design agenda for rewidening and rewilding higher education with utopian imagination | International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education | Full Text

(No) Hope for the future? A design agenda for rewidening and rewilding higher education with utopian imagination | International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education | Full Text | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
This article argues for exploring, connecting, and applying utopian imagination, speculative design, and planetary thinking as a way forward for higher education to reimagine and move towards more hopeful planetary futures. It examines hopepunk and solarpunk perspectives on possible futures to propose a design agenda for rewidening and rewilding higher education and educational technology with utopian imagination. Firstly, the article outlines and develops a framework for wider and wilder futures in higher education, emerging from utopian thinking and desire. Secondly, it connects hopepunk with speculative design and solarpunk with planetary design to highlight and put forward rebellious strategies of hope in envisioning more preferable futures. Thirdly, it approaches the field of educational technology within the context of wide and wild education to establish four planetary orientations concerning educational technology: Higher Education for, in, with, and by the world. Taken together, the article proposes a design agenda for educational technology that integrates utopian imagination and solarpunk practices with planetary educational technology to catalyse the development of more preferable futures in a more-than-human world.

"When ChatGPT was introduced to the public in late 2022, it sparked a significant divide in the education community. On one side, teachers recognized the potential of this tool as a means of personalizing and democratizing learning. On the other, some educators expressed concerns that it would become an ultimate cheating tool, leading to a decline in authentic and creative thought. "

La transformación digital | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
