The travel industry is in a transformative era, shaped by demographic shifts, evolving technologies, and the pressing need for sustainability. As the baton passes from boomers to younger generations, travel providers should adapt to their digital-savvy, value-driven behavior.
Key takeaways
The demands of younger, tech-savvy and conspicuously conscious generations will steadily become more prominent than those of boomers, a lucrative segment that is beginning to age out of frequent travel; At the same time, India is joining China as a rising source of visitors. And across geographies, starker lines of affordability could tempt travel providers and investors to put all their chips on luxury, potentially causing them to miss opportunities presented by the mass market; The travel industry’s attention to sustainability has grown substantially in recent years. Over the coming decade, even greater investment and innovation is needed as suppliers likely face climate-related pressures; Travel providers stand to unlock significant savings and improve the trip experience by applying artificial intelligence (AI) to operational efficiencies across their organizations. And more transformational innovations are on the horizon.

New Report: Best Practices for Local Sourcing in Destinations Destinations around the globe are considering how to embrace tourism’s positive benefits while minimizing the potential negative consequences, and new solutions — such as local sourcing — are emerging. Local sourcing, or implementing sustainable sourcing and procurement procedures in the tourism supply chain, not only promotes sustainable tourism development but significantly contributes to the socioeconomic vitality of a destination.
In this report, Skift Advisory and the Sustainable Tourism Global Center (STGC), initiated by the Ministry of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, offer guidance on how destination leaders can create a new path to sustainably benefit from tourism, centered on sourcing locally. The report also highlights best practices from five successful destinations around the world, inspiring destination leaders to integrate the social-cultural, environmental, and economic implications of sustainable supply chains in ways that improve the health of the destinations where they occur.
Welcome to Skift Megatrends 2024. For me, 2024 feels like a year on a precipice. So much of the world is in flux. From geopolitical unrest to the almost biblical levels of fires and floods and humanity’s rush into artificial intelligence – there’s a palpable sense of urgency.
But in the travel industry, we’re lucky to work in a sector that cherishes connection, togetherness and – forgive the sappiness – love.
So with that, we’re excited to present this year’s Megatrends. They will take you on a journey, exploring 2024 through the lens of our most basic human behaviors. We’re examining epic leaps in medical advancements and ultra-high net worth biohacking. The boom in Al and robotics. And how in 2024 locations like the Middle East and India will revolutionize the regional travel sector.
