(Re)imagining AI for Educators: How to improve Learner-Centered Classrooms with futuristic possibilities

(Re)imagining AI for Educators: How to improve Learner-Centered Classrooms with futuristic possibilities | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a significant conversation at every educational conference in the past two years throughout my usual treks to teacher education events.  As a geriatric millennial with a 20-year career as an educator and scholar, I am thrilled for what navigating this exciting—yet challenging and daring—landscape of AI for educators can mean for all of us.

AI has been making its way into our daily lives in a plethora of ways, even though we have not always noticed it. For example, many people use face recognition to unlock their cell phones or enjoy programming their GPS to know where they are going, and many ensure autocorrect is on to boost their spelling (Reeves, 2023).  One creation of Open AI that has become increasingly popular is ChatGPT, which can put together multiple algorithms to text.  To the delight of some, and the horror of some, AI was at the forefront of educators’ minds in 2023.  From working professionals to teenagers, people around the world expressed fervor that ChatGPT could also save time for writing tasks.  In other words, AI’s impact has already impacted our daily lives, and AI will continue to transform our educational world.

Are new strategies needed for Learning Design services to have real impact?  | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Learning design in UK higher education has been on an interesting journey in recent years. It’s grown in popularity as a term, an activity, and as a moniker for roles that support learning & teaching activity.

The term, along with the role type associated with it; namely a learning designer, is one of the newer titles on the list of learning & teaching support roles in UK higher education. It is more contemporary than titles such as education developer, academic developer and learning technologist, arguably possessing greater cachet as a result.

How does Generative Artificial Intelligence impact student creativity?

How does Generative Artificial Intelligence impact student creativity?  | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

This study aimed to learn about the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on student creative thinking skills and subsequently provide instructors with information on how to guide the use of AI for creative growth within classroom instruction. This mixed methods study used qualitative and quantitative data collected through an AUT test conducted in a college-level creativity course. The authors measured flexibility, fluency, elaboration, and originality of the data to assess the impact of ChatGPT-3 on students’ divergent thinking. The results advocate for a careful approach in integrating AI into creative education. While AI has the potential to significantly support creative thinking, there are also negative impacts on creativity and creative confidence. The authors of this study believe that creativity is central to learning, developing students’ ability to respond to challenges and find solutions within any field; thus the results of this study can be applicable to any classroom faced with the impact and/or integrating the use of AI on idea generation.

Los niños necesitan orientación sobre la IA en la escuela. Pero, ¿quién guía a las escuelas? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

How do students respond to AI Generated questions?

How do students respond to AI Generated questions? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

This paper, which was peer-reviewed and presented in 2023 at the 24th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Higher Ed, evaluated the performance of five types of AG questions to learn more about the way students interact with types of questions on tests and homework. The five types of questions, fill-in-the-blank, matching, multiple choice, free response, and self-graded submit and compare, were incorporated into digital textbooks using VitalSource’s free, artificial intelligence learning tool called Bookshelf CoachMe®.

Key Findings From VitalSource's Study:

  1. The type of question is related to difficulty. Recognition-type questions are generally easier than recall-type questions.
  2. Only about 12% of students input “non-genuine” responses to fill-in-the blank questions, and nearly half of those students persist in answering until they input the correct response.
  3. In a classroom environment, the difficulty index for all question types increases compared to the aggregated data, and all persistence rates are over 90%, indicating students behave differently when answering formative practice when it is incorporated into the course expectations.

Learning Design for an age where old norms are fading away

Learning Design for an age where old norms are fading away | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

AI will revolutionize [insert sector here]” encapsulates the kind of rhetoric we've been hearing for a while. I'm not disputing AI's significant impact on higher education for a second. However, amidst the AI maelstrom, it's very easy to overlook other factors influencing higher education change.

Lifelong learning is one such transformational factor. Whilst it’s often defined as educational opportunities throughout one's life, I view it as broader, encompassing reaching a wider audience with more varied formats.

Momentum behind lifelong learning stems from various factors, including predictions of radical job market changes due to technology, resulting in a more acute need to upskill and re-skill regularly.

Sisyphean nature of Moral Panics against new technology

Sisyphean nature of Moral Panics against new technology | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Moral panics around new technology are as absurd as they are predictable. No sooner do we forget that the last one ever happened and we do it all over again. That’s because we’re hard-wired for confirmation and negativity biases.

Everything that’s already in the world when you’re born is just normal:

  • Anything that gets invented between then and before you turn 30 is incredibly exciting and creative and with any luck you can make a career out of it.
  • Anything that gets invented after you’re 30 is against the natural order of things and the beginning of the end of civilization as we know it, until it’s been around for about 10 years when it gradually turns out to be alright really…”

Is it harmful or helpful? Examining the causes and consequences of Generative AI usage among university students

Is it harmful or helpful? Examining the causes and consequences of Generative AI usage among university students  | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

While the discussion on Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, is making waves in academia and the popular press, there is a need for more insight into the use of ChatGPT among students and the potential harmful or beneficial consequences associated with its usage. Using samples from two studies, the current research examined the causes and consequences of ChatGPT usage among university students.

Study 1 developed and validated an eight-item scale to measure ChatGPT usage by conducting a survey among university students (N = 165). Study 1 provided evidence for the validity and reliability of the ChatGPT usage scale.

Study 2 used a three-wave time-lagged design to collect data from university students (N = 494) to further validate the scale and test the study’s hypotheses. Study 2 also examined the effects of academic workload, academic time pressure, sensitivity to rewards, and sensitivity to quality on ChatGPT usage. Study 2 further examined the effects of ChatGPT usage on students’ levels of procrastination, memory loss, and academic performance. Furthermore, study 2 revealed that when students faced higher academic workload and time pressure, they were more likely to use ChatGPT.

In contrast, students who were sensitive to rewards were less likely to use ChatGPT. Not surprisingly, use of ChatGPT was likely to develop tendencies for procrastination and memory loss and dampen the students’ academic performance. Finally, academic workload, time pressure, and sensitivity to rewards had indirect effects on students’ outcomes through ChatGPT usage.

Edumorfosis's insight:

ChatGPT, cheating, and the future of Education

ChatGPT, cheating, and the future of Education | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Since its Nov. 30, 2022 release, ChatGPT has provoked awe and fear among its millions of users. Yet its seeming brilliance distracts from important flaws: It can produce harmful content and often writes fiction as if it were fact.

Because of these limitations and the potential for cheating, many teachers are worried about ChatGPT’s impact on the classroom. Already, the application has been banned by school districts across the country, including those of New York City, Seattle, and Los Angeles.

These fears are not unfounded. At Harvard, ChatGPT quickly found its way onto students’ browsers. In the midst of finals week, we encountered someone whose computer screen was split between two windows: on the left, an open-internet exam for a statistics class, and on the right, ChatGPT outputting answers to his questions. He admitted that he was also bouncing ideas for a philosophy paper off the AI. Another anonymous source we talked to used the chatbot to complete his open-internet Life Sciences exam.
