Email from Page Harrington: Why Today Matters for Women's History | Herstory | Scoop.it

One day in 1917, a dozen women gathered in front of the White House. They were staging a silent protest to call for women’s right to vote.

Spectators yelled at them, kicked them, and spit on them. They ripped the women’s banners from their hands and threw them onto the ground.

...Today the President will designate a national monument for women's equality. Page Harrington talks about why this matters for women's history.

Meet the wild child ‘Tiger Woman’ who tried to kill Aleister Crowley

Meet the wild child ‘Tiger Woman’ who tried to kill Aleister Crowley | Herstory | Scoop.it

The other morning here at Dangerous Minds Towers (Scotland), while I sat sifting through the mailbag looking for presents and antique snuff boxes, m’colleague Tara McGinley popped a fascinating article in front of me about a wild “Tiger Woman.”

At first I thought this tabloid tale was perhaps about the woman who had inspired Roy Wood to write his rather wonderful and grimy little number “Wild Tiger Woman” for The Move. As I read on, I realized this story of a rebellious singer, dancer and artist’s model was unlikely to have been the woman Wood had in...

Presiding Ladies of the White House

Presiding Ladies of the White House | Herstory | Scoop.it

we present images not of Washington and Lincoln, or even of any of the presidents, but rather the Presiding Ladies of the White House, a biographical album by Lila G. A. Woolfall, with an introduction by noted author and editor Margaret Elizabeth Sangster, published in 1903 by the Bureau of National Literature and Art in Washington, DC. We decided to focus on women related to presidents who aren’t so commonly discussed. It’s a bit surprising today some of the details Woolfall felt important to include, but overall, it’s a pleasurable and informative read.. From top to bottom, they are:

Motherhood, interrupted: brands must be sensitive to the stresses of digital parenting | Herstory | Scoop.it
At a time when parenting is endlessly interrupted by digital communication and social media, brands must beware of exacerbating the pressure on women, writes Nicola Kemp. According to @babycentreuk, mothers feel under intense pressure, and don’t need that made worse by brands.

Imagine you’re a German soldier, fighting your way deep into the Soviet Union during the summer of 1942. During the time you’re not actually on the front lines, you feel pretty safe and get a chance to rest, let down your guard, even sleep a full night without constant vigilance. After all, the Soviet army is retreating fast, and you’re just 19 miles from Moscow.

Is Hello Barbie anti-feminist?

For most of Barbie’s nearly six decades of existence, she has been held up as a symbol of how sexist gender ideals are marketed to young women: a high-heeled, hyper-sexualized stereotype, coated in cotton candy-pink and glitter.
