I mentioned a few blog posts back that, for me as an educationalist, the role of technology is to give us the opportunity to spend more time in the pointy, top-end, of the educational triangle diagram (you can pick any educational triangle diagram – they all imply that the pointy bit is what we are aiming for). Creativity, or something akin to creativity, often labels the pointy bit for example, in Bloom’s taxonomy the term ‘Create’ is used. In other frameworks it relates to agency and identity – various forms of self-determination and expression.

Recently, EdSurge spoke with ESA representatives to learn more about the importance of collaboration for making data interoperability a reality across education agencies and edtech providers. Without interoperability, data silos emerge, making it difficult for stakeholders to access and use the full range of capabilities offered by different edtech products. Adopting a data standard, such as the Ed-Fi Data Standard, enables education agencies to integrate multiple systems and tools, share data securely and leverage technology effectively to improve teaching, learning and administrative processes.

Learning design in UK higher education has been on an interesting journey in recent years. It’s grown in popularity as a term, an activity, and as a moniker for roles that support learning & teaching activity.
The term, along with the role type associated with it; namely a learning designer, is one of the newer titles on the list of learning & teaching support roles in UK higher education. It is more contemporary than titles such as education developer, academic developer and learning technologist, arguably possessing greater cachet as a result.

The adoption of generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has shuffled the list of top skills businesses want from professionals in 2024, according to a new job site study and education industry data. Far from replacing workers, GenAI appears poised to transform the way technologists and others work, allowing them to focus more on creative tasks such as product development, and less on mundane tasks that can be automated.

While the discussion on Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, is making waves in academia and the popular press, there is a need for more insight into the use of ChatGPT among students and the potential harmful or beneficial consequences associated with its usage. Using samples from two studies, the current research examined the causes and consequences of ChatGPT usage among university students. Study 1 developed and validated an eight-item scale to measure ChatGPT usage by conducting a survey among university students (N = 165). Study 1 provided evidence for the validity and reliability of the ChatGPT usage scale. Study 2 used a three-wave time-lagged design to collect data from university students (N = 494) to further validate the scale and test the study’s hypotheses. Study 2 also examined the effects of academic workload, academic time pressure, sensitivity to rewards, and sensitivity to quality on ChatGPT usage. Study 2 further examined the effects of ChatGPT usage on students’ levels of procrastination, memory loss, and academic performance. Furthermore, study 2 revealed that when students faced higher academic workload and time pressure, they were more likely to use ChatGPT. In contrast, students who were sensitive to rewards were less likely to use ChatGPT. Not surprisingly, use of ChatGPT was likely to develop tendencies for procrastination and memory loss and dampen the students’ academic performance. Finally, academic workload, time pressure, and sensitivity to rewards had indirect effects on students’ outcomes through ChatGPT usage.

Before we hit the panic button, there’s a bright side. Wearable AI could finally break the cycle of “memorize facts, sit the test”. Why? Because when students can subtly access any snippet of information, traditional tests become pointless. Even if we suspect only a single student has this tech, it’s time to shift our approach. Soon, we won’t be able to tell who has invisible AI assistance and who doesn’t.
Devices like Meta Ray-Ban and Brilliant Labs Frame AI glasses are more than mere “cheating tools”. They force us to dismantle outdated assessment models that reward rote memorization of easily retrievable facts. As the concept of “open-book” becomes the ever-present reality, how we assess students needs to evolve.

“Aprendemos siempre”.
