Mark Seidenberg is not the first researcher to reach the stunning conclusion that only a third of the nation's schoolchildren read at grade level. The reasons are numerous, but one that Seidenberg cites over and over again is this: The way kids are taught to read in school is disconnected from the latest research, namely how language and speech actually develop in a child's brain.

Seidenberg is a cognitive scientist and professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In his latest book, Language at the Speed of Sight, he points out that the "science of reading" can be a difficult concept for educators to grasp. He says it requires some basic understanding of brain research and the "mechanics" of reading, or what is often referred to as phonics.

I talked with Seidenberg about what it will take to improve reading instruction. Our conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Of all the amendments to the U.S. Constitution, the 14th is a big one. It's shaped all of our lives, whether we realize it or not: Roe v. Wade, Brown v. Board of Education, Bush v. Gore, plus other Supreme Court cases that legalized same-sex marriage, interracial marriage, access to birth control — they've all been built on the back of the 14th. The amendment was ratified after the Civil War, and it's packed full of lofty phrases like due process, equal protection, and liberty. But what do those words really guarantee us?Today on the show: how the 14th Amendment has remade America – and how America has remade the 14th.Clarification: A previous version of this episode did not make clear that the 14th amendment guarantees equal protection and due process to all people in the United States, regardless of citizenship.

Texas fracking billionaire brothers fuel rightwing media with millions of dollars | by Peter Stone | TheGuardian.com

Texas fracking billionaire brothers fuel rightwing media with millions of dollars | by Peter Stone | TheGuardian.com | Schools + Libraries + Museums + STEAM + Digital Media Literacy + Cyber Arts + Connected to Fiber Networks | Scoop.it

Two billionaire Texas brothers whose fortunes derive from oil and gas fracking have pumped millions of dollars into rightwing media outfits that have promoted climate-crisis denialism and sent more big checks to back an array of evangelical projects and conservative Texas politicians.

The fracking billionaires Farris and Dan Wilks have each doled out millions of dollars through separate foundations over the last decade to a number of high-profile conservative and religious groups including the Heritage Foundation, Family Research Council and Focus on the Family.

“Thanks to their incredible wealth and largesse, the country as well as the [Republican] party are now feeling the effects of their aggressive brand of religiously-charged political activism,” said Darren Dochuk, a history professor at the University of Notre Dame and author of Anointed with Oil.

Coop Scoop: The 'Civil War' Movie Celebrates Detachment | by Marc Cooper | The Coop Scoop | Substack.com | Schools + Libraries + Museums + STEAM + Digital Media Literacy + Cyber Arts + Connected to Fiber Networks | Scoop.it

This edition is about the number one movie currently in the U.S., Alex Garland’s Civil War.

Don’t worry if you have not yet seen it.  There are no spoilers.  Mostly because there is absolutely nothing in the film to spoil.

The story, set more or less in the present or the very near future, is about an American Civil War that has torn most of the country apart.  There seems to be a vaguely Trumpian President in power. He is in his third term and has dissolved the FBI (though we don’t know if he did this because he was faced with an armed uprising or were these acts the cause of the revolt.   He is on the verge of losing the war to something called the Western Forces – an alliance between, are you ready, California and Texas!

No, this isn’t an intentional comedy.
