The EU is set to usher in new rules to slash the bloc's packaging waste — but the European Commission's trade department is mounting a rearguard action to stop that from happening.
EU countries are set to give a final stamp of approval to a hard-won deal on the sustainable packaging rules on Friday, after EU institutions came to an agreement last week.
But the Commission's DG TRADE has privately been trying to turn EU countries against the freshly negotiated compromise and in favor of reopening the deal.

If adopted, the CS3D will be the latest reporting requirement imposed on EU businesses to address environmental, social, and governance standards relating to climate change and human rights both within the company and in the supply chain. The CS3D will most likely be adopted in the spring, going into effect in phases starting in 2027.

Travel by train remains overall the most environmentally friendly mode of motorised passenger transport in Europe in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, but efforts must still be made to reach the European Union (EU) 2050 sustainability targets, namely net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and climate neutrality in the next 26 years. Salesforce recently released a study that reveals a large majority of executives think sustainability is key to their organizations’ success, but only about a third consider their business to have effectively adopted sustainable operations in practice.
The study, conducted in partnership with GlobeScan, surveyed 200 sustainability, finance, and technology professionals, including 76 C-suite executives from the United States, Europe, and Asia. The study identified a major gap between ambition and realistic action — while 93% of these executives highly value sustainability in terms of their business’ success, only 37% find it to be well-integrated into their business.
