Record rain helped revive Florida wading birds, just not in the right places | Jenny Staletovich | Miami Herald | MiamiHerald.com | @The Convergence of ICT, the Environment, Climate Change, EV Transportation & Distributed Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

The record rain that pounded South Florida and left the state a sodden mess last spring had a silver lining: an explosion of wading birds.

Threatened wood storks, which nearly disappeared in the early 1980s, doubled their 10-year nesting average. Little blue herons and snowy egrets were up 62 and 54 percent, respectively. Even roseate spoonbills fell just slightly below a dismal average, which is better than plunging even lower.

But while the numbers were up, nesting patterns revealed that a troubling pattern continues. The birds appear to be giving up on the southern Everglades, once the bread basket for the state’s wading birds.

Why Electric Cars Are Built for Cities, But Only Booming in the Suburbs | by Emily Dreibelbis | PCMag.com

Contrary to the doom and gloom headlines about EVs, suburban drivers are loving their eco-friendly rides. No trips to the gas station? Sounds great. Cleaner air for their children and grandchildren? Very important.

Suburbanites are leading America's EV revolution, not the urban, youthful counterculture we tend to associate with social change. Early adopters are primarily wealthy, single-family homeowners who can power up on private chargers versus those in rental property garages. That's likely to continue: By 2030, 60% of EVs will be in suburbs compared to just 20% in cities and 20% in rural areas, according to the US Department of Energy (DOE).

Texas fracking billionaire brothers fuel rightwing media with millions of dollars | by Peter Stone | TheGuardian.com

Texas fracking billionaire brothers fuel rightwing media with millions of dollars | by Peter Stone | TheGuardian.com | @The Convergence of ICT, the Environment, Climate Change, EV Transportation & Distributed Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Two billionaire Texas brothers whose fortunes derive from oil and gas fracking have pumped millions of dollars into rightwing media outfits that have promoted climate-crisis denialism and sent more big checks to back an array of evangelical projects and conservative Texas politicians.

The fracking billionaires Farris and Dan Wilks have each doled out millions of dollars through separate foundations over the last decade to a number of high-profile conservative and religious groups including the Heritage Foundation, Family Research Council and Focus on the Family.

“Thanks to their incredible wealth and largesse, the country as well as the [Republican] party are now feeling the effects of their aggressive brand of religiously-charged political activism,” said Darren Dochuk, a history professor at the University of Notre Dame and author of Anointed with Oil.

What a driverless future might look like | by Derek Robertson | Digital Future Daily | POLITICO.com

Autonomous vehicles, at long last, seem to be winning the hearts and minds of their curious (or brave) passengers.

“SF’s hottest club is a Waymo,” posted one digital artist on X, summing up the mostly warm reviews the self-driving car company has received after it rolled out its commercial taxi service in August 2023. Despite ongoing concerns over safety and job losses, AVs have arrived as a part of everyday life for some Americans: The San Francisco Chronicle reported 191,000 driverless rides between September and November of last year, and Waymo vehicles have driven more than 5 million miles in Arizona.

What does that mean for the United States, arguably the most auto-centric nation in the world? A new report commissioned by the tech industry trade group Chamber of Progress, and shared exclusively with Digital Future Daily, attempts to answer that question as AV companies push to roll out their vehicles across the country.
