The Paradox of Classroom Technology: Despite Proliferation and Access, Students Not Using Technology for Learning

The Paradox of Classroom Technology: Despite Proliferation and Access, Students Not Using Technology for Learning | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
Governments, schools and systems as well as the philanthropic community have invested heavily in technology to keep up with the demands of 21st century learners. Even after years of huge public and private investments and the sheer number of technology-in-education initiatives (1:1 computing, e-Rate, P-TECH, STEM), one would think that students’ use of digital tools and technology for learning in K-12 settings would be ubiquitous. It is in fact the contrary. While the pervasive use of tablets, smartphones, laptops and digital education content is expanding around us, in the classroom, students are not actively using these technologies for learning—even within well-equipped classrooms where access is not the problem. AdvancED® research has found that examples of technology being put to use by students to strengthen learning are barely evident in classrooms today.

After conducting over 140,000 direct classroom observations in K-12 schools in the U.S. and across the globe, AdvancED has uncovered that there are still relatively few classrooms in which students’ use of digital tools and technology is a regular part of a student’s school experience.

Learning Design for an age where old norms are fading away

Learning Design for an age where old norms are fading away | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

“AI will revolutionize [insert sector here]” encapsulates the kind of rhetoric we've been hearing for a while. I'm not disputing AI's significant impact on higher education for a second. However, amidst the AI maelstrom, it's very easy to overlook other factors influencing higher education change.

Lifelong learning is one such transformational factor. Whilst it’s often defined as educational opportunities throughout one's life, I view it as broader, encompassing reaching a wider audience with more varied formats.

Momentum behind lifelong learning stems from various factors, including predictions of radical job market changes due to technology, resulting in a more acute need to upskill and re-skill regularly.

Are new strategies needed for Learning Design services to have real impact?  | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

Learning design in UK higher education has been on an interesting journey in recent years. It’s grown in popularity as a term, an activity, and as a moniker for roles that support learning & teaching activity.

The term, along with the role type associated with it; namely a learning designer, is one of the newer titles on the list of learning & teaching support roles in UK higher education. It is more contemporary than titles such as education developer, academic developer and learning technologist, arguably possessing greater cachet as a result.

Learning analytics dashboard: a tool for providing actionable insights to learners.

Learning analytics dashboard: a tool for providing actionable insights to learners. | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
This study investigates current approaches to learning analytics (LA) dashboarding while highlighting challenges faced by education providers in their operationalization. We analyze recent dashboards for their ability to provide actionable insights which promote informed responses by learners in making adjustments to their learning habits. Our study finds that most LA dashboards merely employ surface-level descriptive analytics, while only few go beyond and use predictive analytics. In response to the identified gaps in recently published dashboards, we propose a state-of-the-art dashboard that not only leverages descriptive analytics components, but also integrates machine learning in a way that enables both predictive and prescriptive analytics. We demonstrate how emerging analytics tools can be used in order to enable learners to adequately interpret the predictive model behavior, and more specifically to understand how a predictive model arrives at a given prediction. We highlight how these capabilities build trust and satisfy emerging regulatory requirements surrounding predictive analytics. Additionally, we show how data-driven prescriptive analytics can be deployed within dashboards in order to provide concrete advice to the learners, and thereby increase the likelihood of triggering behavioral changes. Our proposed dashboard is the first of its kind in terms of breadth of analytics that it integrates, and is currently deployed for trials at a higher education institution.

Virtual first impressions: Zoom backgrounds affect judgements of trust and competence

Virtual first impressions: Zoom backgrounds affect judgements of trust and competence | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
Trait inferences from first impressions are drawn rapidly and spontaneously. However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced interactions online introducing differential influential factors on first impressions. As such, there is an absence of research investigating video background on videoconferencing impression formation. This study explored the influence of video background, facial expression, and gender on first impressions of trustworthiness and competence. Video background affected trustworthy and competence perceptions with Plants and Book backgrounds scoring highly on both dimensions while the Home and Novelty backgrounds consistently received the lowest ratings. Happy faces were perceived as more trustworthy and more competent while female faces were also rated as more trustworthy and more competent, regardless of the background they were using. The explanations for these findings are discussed, along with future directions for research and the implications for videoconferencing use.
