Ursula O'Reilly Traynor 's insight:
 The Pulverised
A Review

90 Minutes of crushing theatre, lifted by wry humour and a touch of the poetic. For it to work "like clockwork" it needed robotic, mechanical precision from the actors and, with bold choreography, they've nailed it, down to a fine art.. The set offers a multisensory experience in a forceful, but not pleasurable way. The ebb and flow of disturbing sounds - hard to place - invisible as the people themselves. Were there faintly acrid smells? Or was that my imagination? As an audience, we are forced to face what is happening, to accept our personal involvement in the process. The ugly truths of globalisation are right there,. inside our cosy product-heavy homes, inside our computers. When writing this, I can't avoid thinking of the human suffering involved in its assembly.

This is a play of persuasive polemic, imbued with perfect timing. I felt as if the small dull grey stones, reminiscent of those you find on graves in graveyards, clung accusingly to my city clothes. And the message is not lost in translation. Excellent ensemble acting, fast-paced, memorable monologues. In spite of those affectionately humourous touches, temporarily lightening the mood, the relentless, pointless, loveless, lifeless routines of desperate people prevailed. In this collection of linked life stories, of worker ants like fluttering moths around the globe, there are no winners. I left, feeling a cold air blow. Shattered.

Modernist master deserves his reputation

"The Swiss painter-sculptor Alberto Giacometti is celebrated in a retrospective at Tate Modern that is both a chance to revel in a particular kind of dusty bohemian glamour and an opportunity to really find out what this character, with his crazy hair and a face as monumentally angular as any modern-art sculpture, actually contributed to the history of art."

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor 's insight:
Well, this informed review certainly increases our desire to get to the Giacometti asap! Which we have already planned to do this weekend. Go early. This one will get very CROWDED very soon into the day.

Gone but not Forgotten: Book and Kitchen - Bookshop which aimed to combine the literary and culinary | London Life Archive | Scoop.it

"Book and Kitchen is a bookshop in Ladbroke Grove and Notting Hill which aims to combine the literary and culinary in a fresh and modern setting."

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor 's insight:

February 2018 Update

This much-more-than-a-bookshop is no more. Shut up shop last Autumn. A great loss to the London literary landscape. A beautufully imagined sociable space lovingly created by Muna. We can but hope she brings her positivity and boundless energy to create something similar elsewhere. We shall be watching and will keep you posted.

 May 2 2017

Having attended a literary party @ Book and Kitchen in February, I fell in love with the place and made a mental note to return. But then life got in the way and hey it's now May! and I haven't been back. But I'm going today! For a browse. For lunch.

Thoughts after Lunch

This book space is even better than I remembered. Quite bijou, with old school jazz playing throughout the two floors of the building. Comfy, tapestried winged armchairs to relax in, a basement with subtle lighting looking out into a delightful courtyard garden. Too miserable yesterday to eat in the garden but we were quite happy having a light vegetarian lunch (courgettes with sumac, couscous with nuts) at a rustic wooden table. Add an eclectic selection of books both new and previously owned and you have the ingredients for a relaxing afternoon. You can even tickle the ivories of a lovely old piano. Just remember that B&K isn't open on Sundays and Mondays. It often hosts private events and unplugged music evenings.

 See website for details.

The exhibition highlights groundbreaking practices that shaped the feminist art movement and provides a timely reminder of the wide impact of a generation of artists. Superwoman: ‘Work, Build and Don’t Whine'

18 June — 17 September 2016

GRAD, in collaboration with Thea Films, is delighted to present Superwoman: 'Work, Build and Don’t Whine'.

Curated by Dr Natalia Murray and actor and award winning filmmaker Dolya Gavanski, the exhibition presents a fascinating exploration of the iconography of the Soviet woman in propaganda from the October Revolution of 1917 to the fall of the Soviet Union and the arrival of Perestroika in 1991. This exhibition, the 10th in GRAD’s Academy programme, charts the development of the Soviet woman and assesses what her legacy is today

I always feel I should love Alex Katz’s paintings. I admire that in Fifties New York he wanted to create a new kind of figurative painting in response to Abstract Expressionism. I share his adoration of Matisse, an artist whose legacy he’s often credited with reinforcing. Painters I like see Katz as a god.
