Welcome to London Life! Enjoy your visit and come back soon! | London Life Archive | Scoop.it

I enjoy stitching this together. It's a crazy patchwork of this city's cultural life ...past, present and yet to happen. It gets ripped apart and sewn afresh most days. Its frequent changes often depend on the colour of the sky, the mood on the street, the rhythm of the river.

I love this city, in its various guises. Curating this online magazine makes me love it even more. It's always going to be a voyage of discovery as I keep unearthing more interesting finds, while digging over the familiar. Join me on the journey! You'd be SO  welcome!

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor 's insight:

Sit right down. Stay as long as you like and help yourself to refreshments. Have a good browse and let us know what you think. Email is probably best, if you don't want to sign up and leave a comment below any of the posts.

Either way I'd love to hear from you!

"Book and Kitchen is a bookshop in Ladbroke Grove and Notting Hill which aims to combine the literary and culinary in a fresh and modern setting."

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor 's insight:

February 2018 Update

This much-more-than-a-bookshop is no more. Shut up shop last Autumn. A great loss to the London literary landscape. A beautufully imagined sociable space lovingly created by Muna. We can but hope she brings her positivity and boundless energy to create something similar elsewhere. We shall be watching and will keep you posted.

May 2 2017

Having attended a literary party @ Book and Kitchen in February, I fell in love with the place and made a mental note to return. But then life got in the way and hey it's now May! and I haven't been back. But I'm going today! For a browse. For lunch.

Thoughts after Lunch

This book space is even better than I remembered. Quite bijou, with old school jazz playing throughout the two floors of the building. Comfy, tapestried winged armchairs to relax in, a basement with subtle lighting looking out into a delightful courtyard garden. Too miserable yesterday to eat in the garden but we were quite happy having a light vegetarian lunch (courgettes with sumac, couscous with nuts) at a rustic wooden table. Add an eclectic selection of books both new and previously owned and you have the ingredients for a relaxing afternoon. You can even tickle the ivories of a lovely old piano. Just remember that B&K isn't open on Sundays and Mondays. It often hosts private events and unplugged music evenings. See website for details.

Selfie to Self-Expression @ Saatchi Gallery #London

Selfie to Self-Expression @ Saatchi Gallery #London | London Life Archive | Scoop.it

SAATCHI

The Saatchi Gallery made me smile last Thursday evening and I have kept smiling ever since – rare for me! The exhibition is called From Selfie to Self- Expression; well, whatever the title, it’s really photos of some very serious high-art self-portraits– Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo’s Self Portrait withThorn Necklace and Hummingbird, and moving on toward the magnificent Chuck Close. All of this mingling done superbly – a great hang.

However, the room which made me smile contained for me - what I will call The Wall–a massive wall - plastered with loads and loads of tiny selfies taken by “ordinary” people; it seemed from all over the world. And it was singing! It made me feel I was part of the universe. Thank you Saatchi!Thank you to the artist, Christopher Baker.

Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins @ Barbican

Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins @ Barbican | London Life Archive | Scoop.it
#AnotherKindofLife

Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins looks at the continuing fascination of artists with those on the margins of society through the photographic medium. Some of the most powerful images of the 20thand 21st century are the result of a determined and often prolonged engagement with communities seemingly at odds with, or on the fringes of, the mainstream. Another Kind of Life explores photography’s relationship with this compelling subject through the work of 20 exceptional image-makers, including Bruce Davidson, Paz Errázuriz, Casa Susanna, Larry Clark, Mary Ellen Mark, Boris Mikhailov, Daido Moriyama and Dayanita Singh. Part of the Barbican’s 2018 season The Art of Change, which reflects on the dialogue between art, society and politics, the exhibition directly – and at times poetically – addresses difficult questions about what it means to exist in the margins, the role artists have played in portraying subcultures and the complex intermingling between artistic and mainstream depictions of the outsider.

Another Kind of Life  at Barbican Art Gallery until 27 May 2018.

Saturdays @ Rose Theatre #London

Saturdays @ Rose Theatre #London | London Life Archive | Scoop.it

"The Rose Theatre was built in 1587 but was only discovered in 1989 during excavations for new office buildings. Two-thirds of the original site were discovered, and the public formed a campaign to 'Save the Rose' and protect it from redevelopment. The Rose was the first of four playhouses to be built at Bankside.

Shakespeare's company, which was based at the nearby Globe Theatre also played here. During the summer months Shakespeare's Globe brings tours to the Rose  every day except Monday, and the tours encompass both the Globe Exhibition and the site of the Rose.

Fundraising to fully excavate the site is still ongoing, and in the meantime, visitors can explore a light and sound exhibition, with a video narrated by Sir Ian Mckellan. There is also large scale model of the Rose Theatre as it might have been in 1587."

Theatre Review: Mating Behaviour @ PENTAMETERS THEATRE Hampstead

Theatre Review: Mating Behaviour @ PENTAMETERS THEATRE Hampstead  | London Life Archive | Scoop.it
Pentameters Theatre Hampstead
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor 's insight:
MATING BEHAVIOUR by John Cooper.

This is a delightful comedy of four young people (under thirty) trying to find a mate - even a life-long one
There is Anne, (Georgie Ashworth) a glamorous model who resides in Hampstead; there is Pierce, (Timothy Weston) a womanizing TV chat show host living in Islington; there is Sara, (Alana Hillenaar) an editor in a major publishing firm; she lives in Camden - and then there is Matthew, (Nick Skaugen) a scruffy enough English teacher who lives in Crouch End. Ah well - up North!

The theme of the play is to see if such “sophisticates” have really moved beyond the laws of the jungle.
Basically, Ann fancies Pierce, Sara fancies Matthew, Matthew fancies Anne, Pierce fancies himself and in this cappuccino cauldron, things swirl around quite uneventfully until dull Matthew states that his real passion isn’t “the teaching,” he wants to be a writer.

Then it’s turnaround time, and time to grind new beans!
The pace is zany and frenetic, brilliantly directed by Harry Meacher. This is a very witty, fast play but loaded with great lines of wisdom about men, about women, about love and the searching for it and its wonder.

The play lies somewhere between Noel Coward and G.B. Shaw – not a bad niche for a playwright to find himself in!
The audience rarely stopped laughing and/or nodding in agreement. During the interval, I asked the couple beside me what they thought of it so far; they said they were enjoying it - and just as well, they had met for the first time that evening on a blind date. What better venue!!
