Call for environmental emergency to be declared after data reveals 105% rise in raw sewage discharges over past 12 months
Tony Ibarra's comment, March 27, 1:52 PM
Wow, that is a very interesting choice that the companies made. I wonder what their thinking was when they made that choice.
Cameron Montgomery's comment, March 27, 2:39 PM
I thought this article was quite surprising for the fact that to me when I think of England, one of the first words that comes to mind is cleanliness, however with only two companies making their sewage overflow data public, while other companies try to hide it.

Klamath River dams drained, and watershed restoration begins

Klamath River dams drained, and watershed restoration begins | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Reservoirs have been drained as the nation's largest dam removal effort advances on the Klamath River, and an effort to restore the watershed is taking root.
Sophia Hoolihan's comment, March 27, 3:17 PM
It's interesting how this is the largest dam removal project in history, and the main reason the dam is being removed is because it's cheaper to remove it rather than update it to current environmental standards. After the ecosystem adjusts, ideally salmon will be able to spawn upriver again. Some may argue it kills the fish currently in the reservoir, but that was expected and those fish are not native to the Klamath River.

Malawi follows Zambia in declaring drought disaster as El Niño brings hunger to southern Africa | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The southern African nation of Malawi has declared a state of disaster over drought in 23 of its 28 districts.
Laura Casas's comment, March 26, 3:19 PM
It is so sad what is happening in South Africa and its neighboring countries. I was really shocked when I read that over 100 elephants died in a national park of dehydration.
Izabelle Ruehlman's comment, March 26, 3:33 PM
When I was younger I would always hear about el ninos and la ninas and their effects on our coastline here in CA. But I never realized that there was such strong effects for the counties on the other side of the pacific. It makes me sad the bubble I lived in, but I guess that comes with time. You learn more to get out of that bubble.
Fru A. Wanka's curator insight, March 27, 3:14 AM
Drought is detrimental to food and nutrition security as well as livelihood. It reduces crop yield and income for those who rely on farm produce for their living. Malawi is not experiencing drought for the very first time. So what measures have been put in place to build resilience against drought to prevent the misery it brings to the population?

This article was very informative for me. I knew any kind of smoke could cause health issues, but I had been under the impression that clean burning materials like wood would be less dangerous than burning something like a fossil fuel. Very interesting.

Tulare Lake was resurrected to more than 100,000 acres, bringing fear and wonder. I went to see it – and couldn’t find it
Vanessa Guetzoian's comment, March 24, 5:10 PM
It was interesting to see how this lake changed from not even being very present in February of 2023, to returning with a larger presence in May of 2023, to ultimately diminishing to a smaller size this month. The lake's return showed how California's irregular, extreme weather conditions can cause the body of water to return at unpredictable, varying sizes over the coming years.

John Burns's comment, March 15, 11:53 AM
It sounds like they had an expert come look at the beach and give suggestions on how they could protect it and told them the outcomes of each scenario. The volunteer group that helped with building the dune is quoted saying “the sacrificial dunes did their job.” Yes they did, and now must be rebuilt if that is the way the residents chose to keep protecting their homes. It is amazing how quickly the ocean can move structures.

Considering how most fires are caused by human interaction with the environment, this doesn't surprise me too much. I have a strong belief these fires are caused by above ground utilities and not ones placed underground. It would be wise to overhaul some older power and utility systems and place them underground.

At least 50 people have died in Argentina after a month's worth of rain fell in just a couple of hours, triggering flash flooding.
Izabelle Ruehlman's insight:

This was due to a months worth of rain falling in the matter of a few hours. The land and the town could not handle that intensity.
Alex Gilman's comment, March 25, 2:03 PM
This is very scary as I showed an article about the Flood Disaster In Libya taking away lives and getting 10,000 people missing so by seeing, this shows how it gets more frequent in places with low economy and infrastructure for these disasters.
