When Is Fake News Propaganda? | Lina Mai | FacingHistory.org | Schools + Libraries + Museums + STEAM + Digital Media Literacy + Cyber Arts + Connected to Fiber Networks | Scoop.it

Facebook’s recent admission that social media can have a negative influence on democracy is the most overt acknowledgment to date that the spread of fake news could have impacted the 2016 US presidential election. The recent surge of misinformation on social media for political gain is a call to action for educators to take a closer look at fake news as propaganda. But when does fake news cross that line?

While it’s only recently become a mainstay of modern headlines, fake news is not a new concept. Many Americans can recall standing in line at the supermarket and seeing headlines about UFO landings, secret celebrity illnesses, and other specious claims from tabloids like the National Enquirer. To understand the nuance between fake news and propaganda, you first have to have a clear definition of each term.

Kapur’s suit is just the latest sign of trouble within the office overseeing the roughly 15,000 English learners in BPS classrooms. Just last fall, eight members of a district task force on English learners resigned in protest over the district's plans to move away from “language-specific” programs for its multilingual learners in the next few years.

In a possible sign that journalism is losing some of its allure with students, the University of New Hampshire is cutting its English/journalism major.

The school will still provide journalism education, but will no longer offer it as a major, the Boston Globe reported.

Instead of being part of the English Department with its heavy emphasis on writing, the school will expose journalism students to classes in other departments, the paper continues.

For nearly two years, Moms for Liberty has been framing their book banning efforts across public schools as a fight for “parental rights” — a rallying call that has gained traction among some conservative lawmakers and candidates. But when put to voters at the polls in November 2023, candidates endorsed by Moms for Liberty performed poorly in school board elections, and in states like Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, the majority of candidates running on a Moms for Liberty platform lost.

Where did Homo sapiens go after leaving Africa? New study has an answer | by Will Dunham | Reuters.com

C

WASHINGTON, March 25 (Reuters) - Our species emerged in Africa more than 300,000 years ago, with a migration out of the continent 60,000 to 70,000 years ago heralding the start of the global spread of Homo sapiens. But where did these pioneers go after leaving Africa?

After years of debate, a new study offers an answer. These bands of hunter-gatherers appear to have lingered for thousands of years as a homogeneous population in a geographic hub that spanned Iran, southeast Iraq and northeast Saudi Arabia before going on to settle all of Asia and Europe starting roughly 45,000 years ago, scientists said on Monday.

AL: In All of History, It’s Never The Good Guys Banning Books | by Jeff Martin | MontgomeryIndependent.com

Last week, a newly appointed conservative library board fired Prattville’s library director because he had fulfilled an open records request from the media. This is the same library board that recently made sweeping changes to the library’s policies. Sixteen is the age of consent to have sex in Alabama but trying to checkout a book on sex before the age of 17 might prove difficult in Prattville. New policies ban certain books for minors under 17 if they determine a book contains “obscenity, sexual conduct, sexual intercourse, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender discordance. In other words, just about everything you might see on any network television series.

The Real Mission Behind Moms for Liberty | hosted by Brooke Gladstone | On the Media | WNYCStudios.org | Schools + Libraries + Museums + STEAM + Digital Media Literacy + Cyber Arts + Connected to Fiber Networks | Scoop.it

Last fall, it seemed like Moms for Liberty, the infamous political group behind the recent push for book bans in schools across the country, might be on the wane, after a series of losses at school board and local district elections in November. But shortly afterward, Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice claimed in an interview, "we're just getting started," boasting about the group's plans to ramp up efforts this year.

Jennifer Berkshire, lecturer at Yale University’s Education Studies Department, and author of the forthcoming book "The Education Wars: A Citizens’ Guide and Defense Manual," is wary of writing the group off. She argues that perhaps their progress, or lack thereof, in the polls isn't a good indicator of their success.

Brooke speaks with Berkshire about the larger project behind Moms for Liberty to ultimately sow distrust in the public school system that extends far beyond the controversial book banning campaigns the Moms have now become famous for.

The House has voted to pass a bipartisan bill that could lead to a nationwide ban of TikTok. Congress has cited concerns that the China-owned app is sharing American users' data with the Chinese government, and that TikTok is spreading propaganda. Tech journalist Julia Angwin, founder of the new nonprofit outlet Proof News, isn't so convinced by those arguments. This week, Julia tells Micah Loewinger about how TikTok's practices compare to other platforms; what a ban or forced sale of the app would (or would not) accomplish; and why the U.S. needs better regulations for all social media companies.
